National Alliance for the Mentally Ill: A volunteer association of family members of persons with mental illness, this organization offers advocacy, information and support for other family members. An excellent source of information on mental illness, status of research on mental illness and the status government legislation affecting mental illness.
The Arc: Formerly the Association for Retarded Citizens, The Arc represents citizens with developmental disabilities and their families. This site offers information about various disorders; support and service resources.
NIAAA: The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism offers information for people with addictions and their families. Links to information on understanding alcoholism, finding resources for help.
Internet Mental Health: Internet Mental Health contains sections on mental disorders, medications, and research. Several areas are devoted to information on schizophrenia.
National Mental Health Association: The NMHA is a non-profit organization working to improve mental health through advocacy, education, research, and service. Addresses for local chapters are included.
Fountain House: Begun as a self-help group by 10 patients in a state mental hospital, Fountain House has become a center for research into rehabilitation for individuals with mental illness. Its programs include a nationally recognized clubhouse.
Caramore Community, Inc: A premier 24-hour employment and residential/community skills training facility exclusively for personas with severe mental challenges, located in Carrboro, NC. This statewide community transition program operates group homes and apartments and provides real work employment programs leading to responsible independence in all areas of life. Success rates exceed 90%.
